Why wavelets

Solar detail lives at several scales at once.

Unsharp masking and deconvolution treat the frame as a single scale, which is why they tend to amplify noise before they finish resolving structure. Solar features don't work that way: surface granulation, penumbral fibrils and active regions all sit at different frequencies in the same image.

  • Separate the image into three frequency layers and sharpen each independently.
  • Contrast-aware thresholding on every layer, so low-contrast background doesn't turn to grain.
  • Full artistic control, so you can push fine detail hard without wrecking the limb or the disk.
